Lake Austin Overlook
Janet Hobbs designed this knockout house for some friends on a lot overlooking Lake Austin. They said, "This house is pretty eclectic. We wanted unique, but not weird. We wanted clean, but not vacant. We wanted comfortable, but not traditional." This is an excellent description of the home. More to see here....

South Austin - Keeping It Weird
Here we have an Austin infill the was designed by Hobbs' Ink, and built by Cass Brewer. A very tight lot, with a very steep, but interesting, creek bluff behind it. Check it out here....

RLM design - Rollingwood

Man Space
We photographed a home built by Matt Hand of Canyon Creek Homes. While there is no denying that it's a man-centric house, I think that it's a great example of Hill Country Fusion design, with an interior finish out that's definitely not girly!

Costa Bella Estate
We shot this house for Doris Van Trease, the broker. We were only hired to shoot the exterior, but since we were there early, how about we take a couple of the interior as well...... On the market now for $2.3M - and worth it!

Katz Builders Modern
Katz Builders did an extensive remodel west of Austin a few years ago, and the results are stunning. We got the opportunity to photograph the home recently and jumped at the chance. See why!

Personal Inspiration
Dear Friend,
I had an inspiring day Friday, and I have something I would like to tell you.
In the morning, I attended the funeral of a friend's mother, then after work I saw Dr. Maya Angelou perform at the Paramount Theater. In both places I heard readings that struck a deep chord with me, which I feel compelled to share.
I went to the funeral service first thing in the morning. The priest delivering the sermon read from Matthew 25:31 - 40
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?
38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’
40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’"
When he read the last line I felt something change in my world. The concept that we are all interconnected and that good (or bad) actions affect us all is not a new concept to me, but when he read that line, I did see the concept in a new way. I thought about it several times during the day, up to the time that we saw Maya Angelou.
In case you aren't aware of her credentials (as I wasn't until Friday night), Dr. Angelou was born in 1928 and in addition to having played the grandmother on the
series "Roots" in the 80's, has taught philosophy in 3 different languages as well writing poetry, singing, dancing, songwriting and a myriad of other creative activities. She holds over 30 honorary degrees and is a lifetime professor at Wake Forest. Whether you agree with her social leanings or not, she is a towering intellect and, despite her now frail body, has a presence that completely fills the theater. When talking about one of her inspirations, she quoted Terence, a black slave from the Roman empire, who famously said,
"I am a human being; nothing human can be alien to me."
Hmmmmm. So despite the fact that his station in life was that of a Roman slave, he could still understand and take ownership of any human action, strength or shortcoming. So why couldn't I do that?
I'm making a New Year's resolution 2 months early this year to be more willing to accept what other people are and do, and to better duplicate their viewpoint and to help them from that perspective.

Travis Heights Craftsman
Westlake Modern Makeover
The fine folks at Hobbs' Ink helped Katz Builders with this beauty in Westlake. The owners wanted the home, which only had a pass-through from the kitchen to the living area, to be open, and thoroughly updated. Oh yeah, they got that! They also added an entire wing onto the end of the house, with two bedrooms, a Jack & Jill bath, and a treetop-viewing playroom cum office.
Equestrian Ranch Update
Katz Builders updated this ranch house west of Austin recently, with design help from Hobbs' Ink. The old plan had a closed off (small) kitchen with a terrible laundry "room" behind it. They gutted and enlarged the kitchen, added a new master suite and a real laundry room, as well as a garage. They also converted the covered porch to a fully screened outdoor living area. See the results here.....

North Austin Remodel
EliotJ Construction did a remodel that was designed by Hobbs' Ink. What a beautiful result! The remodel was done inside of a 20 year old remodel which had low ceilings and was a little broken up. Check out this great end product...Flickr Group.

Avenue G Remodel
This past week I took photos of an extensive remodel that was done by Pro Care Construction, designed by Hobbs' Ink. As Austin continues to grow, this type of in town renovation is becoming more and more common. Areas that languished for years as "student housing" are now being viewed as "in town" and are experiencing strong revivals as people move away from the suburbs and push toward the city center. The Flickr photo set is here.

Parade of Homes - 2010
Hobbs' Ink designed this home for the 2010 Parade of Homes, and it was built by Triton Custom Homes. What a beautiful home! Interior design was done by PPDS, and as you can see, it is mid century fabulous. I got to take these pictures while James Bruce took the official pictures. I'd have to say that he took some great pictures, as did Merrick Ales. OK, I have a LOT I can learn from these 2 guys, but here are mine to look at..... Flickr

Shooting the Eco Ranch
Last year, a couple that my wife designed a house for overlooking the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin let us shoot their house, and here is the set from the shoot. As many of you know, her firm is Hobbs' Ink.
As it was one of my first times to take photographs "in anger", it was a learning experience. I took something like 300 pictures, which was massive overkill, and I found that following that approach can get some good images, but it makes the vetting process so daunting that it's difficult to finish the project. More after the jump...
